Event Description:

Lifelong’s food and nutrition program, Chicken Soup Brigade (CSB), improves the nutritional health of individuals living with chronic conditions and hunger. We recognize the importance of nutrition to overall health. It has the power to reduce symptoms of many illnesses. It can minimize medication side effects. And it can provide comfort when it is needed most.

Chicken Soup Brigade’s clients have specific health challenges, such as HIV, diabetes, kidney disease, cancers, or disabling arthritis. Most are living below the Federal Poverty Level, and all require assistance in managing their nutritional health. CSB offers a comprehensive food and nutrition program designed not only to feed people but to nourish them.

What we'll be doing:

Kitchen volunteers are a part of CSB’s lively, bustling kitchen operation! You're a part of a team of top chefs who prepare nutritious and delicious meals for our chronically ill clients. Slicing, dicing, chopping, packaging - all are examples of tasks you could do in any given shift. No prior kitchen experience required… just a willingness to learn a new skill. Each week we prepare and package 4000 meals - we couldn’t do this without our amazing community of volunteers!

What you should know:

Group Member Form Required: YES - Volunteers are required to fill out a Group Member Form by 9:00 am on Monday, January 12th, in order to volunteer onsite. Enter "One Brick" in the "Group or Employer Name" section. Please note that if you've completed this form before and have passed your background check, Lifelong should have you listed as an approved One Brick volunteer (but let us know if you're unsure of your status).

Masks Required: OPTIONAL - Masks are optional inside Lifelong facilities. Volunteers are requested to cancel their volunteer registration if feeling sick, and especially if exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms and/or have tested positive for COVID-19. Please cancel on the event page and/or email your Event Manager as soon as possible so that we can update Lifelong on any roster changes.

Getting Here: Free on-site parking within the Georgetown Yards complex between the buildings marked "4634" and "4636". Please try to avoid the reserved spots and look for those marked for visitors. Street parking also available behind the buildings on the Ohio St side and down the block on S Alaska St. Nearby bus routes are 131 & 132 but will be about a 10-15 minute walk from the nearest stop. Bicycles can be secured inside the building.

Entrance: If you're entering the exterior door with "4634" above it near the E Marginal Way driveway, follow the Lifelong signs down the hallway on the ground floor to Suite C-140 on your left side and press the doorbell marked "Saturday kitchen volunteers" if one of the chefs isn't visible inside. The back exterior door of the 4634 building *should* also be unlocked (if you're entering from the Ohio St side, Suite C-140 should be halfway down the hallway on your right side, then follow the rest of the instructions above).

Children 14 and over are welcome to volunteer at Lifelong with an adult chaperone (1:1 ratio), and all volunteers under 18 must submit a signed Parental Consent Form and a Lifelong Volunteer Application (Minor) prior to each volunteer session.

Food & Safety: Please notify Lifelong staff if you have any physical limitations or allergies, open cuts, or do not feel well prior to volunteering.

Where to Meet:

Lifelong relocated to the Georgetown Yards complex in Spring 2025. The Chicken Soup Brigade kitchen is located in the building marked "4634" in suite C-140 on the ground floor.

Lifelong:

Lifelong's mission is to empower people living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS and/or other chronic conditions to lead healthier lives. Lifelong was formed in 2001 through the merger of Chicken Soup Brigade and Northwest AIDS Foundation. From our beginnings in 1983, when we passed a soup can around Volunteer Park and collected $42 to help people living with HIV/AIDS in our community, Lifelong has remained a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS and continues to be a champion of healthy lives for all. Today, our years of serving people with HIV/AIDS have provided us with the knowledge base to help others experiencing hunger and the spectrum of HIV illnesses.
