Event Description:
Due to COVID-19 One Brick cannot organise group events. However, in case you were wanting to help volunteer in the community with a friendly face - join Barbara at Second Harvest's Warehouse Food Sort. Food sorting is considered Essential Volunteering and therefore allowable despite the Shelter-at-home orders in Santa Clara County.
Note you MUST RSVP DIRECTLY WITH SECOND HARVEST HERE https://www.shfb.org/give-help/volunteer/volcalendar-general/! Spots fill up fast, but there's often last minute drop outs so check in 1-2 days prior if the event is full on Second Harvest calendar when you read this.
Second Harvest Food Bank provides over a million pounds of food to individuals and families in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Currently they are supporting over 500 000 individuals every month - more than twice the amount than previous years.
What we'll be doing:
The primary responsibility of a Food Sort Volunteer is to prepare food for distribution by verifying, sorting, labeling, and repacking food items at one of our two distribution centers (Bing Center in San Carlos or Cypress Center in North San Jose). Training is provided at the beginning of each shift.
Notes from Barbara: The set up at the warehouse is completely different from before. We used to sort food donations from individuals. Because of the pandemic SH has not been accepting food donations. They now buy everything in bulk with monetary donations from companies and individuals.
I’ve sorted apples, pears, kiwi and various veggies checking the quality of each piece. I’ve also packed chicken, salmon, beef and pork into boxes. Then sometimes volunteers are on an assembly line packing boxes for distribution.
Each station or table is at least 6’ apart. We wash our hands, wear gloves and masks. The team leaders are good at making sure we are social distancing unless from the same household. The ventilation is good and we disinfect the work area when done. I feel safe volunteering there and leave with a good feeling that I helped just a tad.
What you should know:
We will be working in a warehouse so safety and comfort are important.
- It can be chilly in the warehouse; however we will probably be working pretty hard - so layers are suggested.
- Long pants and close-toed shoes are required. High heels and sandals are not permitted in the warehouse. For sanitary reasons, tank tops are not permitted.
- It's best to leave purses, jewelry and other valuables at home or locked in your car trunk.
- Necklaces and long earrings pose a safety concern in the warehouse.
MASKS are required - please bring your own!
Note this IS NOT A ONE BRICK EVENT you MUST RSVP DIRECTLY WITH SECOND HARVEST HERE https://www.shfb.org/give-help/volunteer/volcalendar-general/!
