Event Description:

UPDATE FROM FARESTART 3/9/20: We want to thank you for your enthusiasm for volunteering with us and your support of the FareStart mission.

Due to an abundance of caution surrounding the recent COVID-19 outbreak in King County, we are cancelling volunteer shifts through March 15.

You are receiving this information because you are registered for a shift that has now been canceled.

Tomorrow, we will be announcing to the rest of the volunteer community that we are cancelling volunteer shifts through March, on a weekly basis. This will enable us to continue to assess need and respond to the rapidly evolving situation around COVID -19.

To ensure our students continue to receive job training and the community has access to food, we will be expanding our work to provide meals to nonprofit organizations and shelters in need during the COVID-19 crisis.

Generally, this cancellation does not mean that we do not need help. Please keep an eye out as we may be calling on volunteer support in different capacities.

Thank you for your continued support during this time! We are very lucky to have you as a part of our FareStart Community.

Please visit https://www.farestart.org/responding-covid-19 for more information on FareStart's COVID-19 response & how to help!

FareStart is a non-profit organization that trains homeless and disadvantaged individuals for jobs in the culinary industry, empowering them to transform their lives. FareStart delivers nutritious meals every day of the year to several area homeless shelters and child care centers. On the weekends and holidays (when there are fewer FareStart culinary students on-site) FareStart chefs rely on volunteer power to ensure that we can get these important meals to our neighbors in need.

What we'll be doing:

Volunteer tasks include basic food preparation: Peeling and chopping vegetables, assembling lasagna, making sandwiches, mixing salad dressing, etc. No cooking experience or Food Handler's card is necessary, but food preparation does require standing on a hard surface for the duration of our shift. Chefs will assign tasks based on individual skill and comfort level.

What you should know:

This volunteer opportunity is limited to only 10 volunteers in the Contract Kitchen, so it's essential that if you RSVP for this volunteer shift that you show up to volunteer. It's often difficult to find last-minute replacement volunteers, and the food that we're preparing in the Contract Kitchen is critical to our community neighbors in need - thanks for your understanding!

FareStart insurance requires all kitchen volunteers to be at least 18 years old. FareStart will provide aprons during our shift, but wear sturdy clothes which you don't mind getting dirty. Volunteers must wear closed-toe, non-slip shoes that cover your entire foot (no sandals), full-length pants (no shorts), and either your own baseball cap or a hair net (provided by FareStart). Long hair must be pulled back during our shift.

FareStart recommends either leaving valuables at home or keeping them on your person. There are lockers for coats, purses, and small bags, but if you'd like to place items in a locker please arrive between 9:45 - 9:55 am. Volunteer orientation will start as close to 10:00 am as possible, so it helps if volunteers arrive early (FareStart's volunteer orientation video is also available online). Please do not arrive at FareStart before 9:45 am since FareStart catering staff have separate assignments and are not able to supervise volunteers until Contract Kitchen staff are ready at 9:45 am.

Lunch is also provided during your scheduled break! NOTE: If all volunteer tasks are completed before our shift is scheduled to end, volunteers may be released early. Volunteers are also welcome to stay past our scheduled shift end time if there are still tasks to be completed.

Please note that confidentiality is essential for FareStart student safety and that a photo release form must be signed by every FareStart student and graduate before their photograph is taken for any public display. The FareStart "Volunteer Expectations" document is available if you have specific questions.

Where to Meet:

FareStart's Contract Kitchen entrance is located on the Virginia Street side of the FareStart building - look for the white door near the alley entrance and a hanging sign with the FareStart logo and "Administration | Training | Student Services". This door is typically locked, but there is a phone number and instructions posted on how to contact the kitchen so that a staff member can bring you inside to the contract kitchen.

FareStart:

FareStart provides a community that transforms lives by empowering homeless and disadvantaged men, women, and families to achieve self-sufficiency through life skills, job training and employment in the food service industry.
