Event Description:
The Sunprint Kit was developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science in the 70's and has been a favorite craft project for families for many years. The Sunprint Kit is based on the cyanotype process, which has been used by artists since its development in the 19th century to make photographic prints of objects. It uses light-sensitive paper that turns a deep blue when exposed directly to the sun, gradients of lighter blue when partially exposed, and white where covered up. Sunprint paper can also be used as a scientific tool. Its sensitivity to ultra-violet light allows it to be used as a measuring tool for any other UV light source, or as a photographic medium to use in scientific experiments. The kits are used by schools, community groups, professional development and families worldwide. As a nonprofit organization, volunteers help assemble these kits in house to save on production costs. Revenue directly benefits the mission of the Hall, to inspire and foster the learning of science & mathematics for all.
What we'll be doing:
Volunteers will be working alongside other volunteers with music and conversation flowing as they work. Two processes: Stuffing and packing. Volunteers will assemble our Sunprint kits (insert the Sunprint paper and a small piece of acrylic into the package envelope) or stuff the Sunprint paper into opaque black bags, to prepare them to be made into kits. We always give a demo of the process to ensure that all volunteers are comfortable with assembling. No requirements are needed. We do ask that volunteers wear gloves while stuffing the paper into the bags, but we provide both latex and nitrile gloves if someone has an allergy.
What you should know:
Dress casual
All volunteers will receive a Family Guest pass to come back or give to another family.
Full cafe available onsite
Parking: We ask that community volunteers pay for parking. It is $1/hour. There are Public lots located on both sides of the street around the center and handicap parking is also available.
Gloves will be provided for the assembly Children 10 years+ may volunteer with an adult, but must be included as a volunteer.
No other guests are permitted during the volunteer project time period.
Where to Meet:
