Event Description:
Glide's Free Meals Program serves three nutritious meals a day to the city's poor and homeless every day of the year. This equals roughly a million meals annually!
What we'll be doing:
One Brick volunteers will be assisting Glide's staff in preparing the dining room, placing food on serving trays, carrying trays to seated guests and wiping down tables. Your presence at Glide sends a powerful message to the hungry persons who eat in their Daily Free Meals Program - it says that you care and that they are worthy of your time and energy. The diverse population who regularly utilize Glide's Daily Free Meals Program include those who are homeless or near homeless, those whose lives have been impacted by the use of drugs and alcohol and/or mental illness, elders and low-income families or individuals.
What you should know:
Please wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind serving food in and getting a little dirty. Closed-toe shoes and shirts with long or short sleeves are required (no tank tops). During your volunteer service you will also be wearing a hair net (or cap if you bring one with you), plastic apron and plastic gloves. As always, after the event we will head out and get some food and drinks of our own. We will surely be hungry by then!
OTHER WAYS TO PROVIDE REAL HELP
In preparation for your volunteer service at Glide, consider collecting the following items from your co-workers and classmates from any hotel stays and bring them to us. We can put them to good use as part of our Walk-in Center Emergency Services Program. Glide turns personal care products into Hygiene Kits that save lives! Items in need include bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, disposable razors, shaving cream, feminine hygiene products. Small sizes are best, but we'll take any size. They are also in need of new pairs of socks and clean t-shirts in any size.
Glide:
The Free Meals Program - which is the largest of Glide's programs - utilizes one commercial-grade kitchen, two dining rooms, and tens of thousands of volunteers. It all adds up to over one million meals served annually, all in an environment of acceptance and respect.
