Event Description:

KidVantage (formerly Eastside Baby Corner) helps children have what they need to grow, play, learn, and thrive by providing essential care, safety, and health goods for children who are experiencing homelessness, poverty, or family disruption. KidVantage reaches kids and families in the central Puget Sound region through a collaborative network of human service, education, and health providers.

What we'll be doing:

Volunteers may assemble & distribute orders for children in need, help to sort, assess, organize, and prepare donations, and/or complete other special projects.

Please note that the KidVantage Shoreline Hub is open for in-kind donation drop-offs the first & third Saturdays each month from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Volunteers may assist donors with bringing donation items inside, or to help move & consolidate items to maintain clear pathways.

What you should know:

Getting Here: This KidVantage location is on a private drive off of NE 175th St NE in Shoreline (see PDF map here). Look for the large "North City Lumber" sign and Loyal Automotive, and the smaller KidVantage sign attached to the fence. Turn into the driveway, drive to the end of the building and turn left (do not continue straight through the senior living community next door). The blue building at the end of the driveway is KidVantage Shoreline.

Free parking is available in the lot outside of the building. If driving, please either park on either side of the driveway in front of the building (see the orange signs) or in the lumber yard's back driveway on Saturdays. Please do not block the donation turn-around path in front of the garage door.

The nearest Metro bus lines are the 347 & 348. Bike racks are not available onsite, but you're welcome to bring your bike inside the building for safekeeping during our volunteer shift.

Entrance: Look for the KidVantage signs on the blue building. Enter through the office door on the left (ring the doorbell if locked) or through the garage doors on the right (if already open).

Personal Items: KidVantage has a volunteer area for coats & small personal items, or you can keep them with you in the warehouse to store during our shift. Volunteers are welcome to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated while volunteering, but filtered hot & cold water, tea bags, coffee, and small snacks are usually available onsite for volunteers.

What to Wear: Please dress in comfortable clothing (layers are recommended to adjust for temperature preferences). For your safety, please wear closed toe shoes since we will be working inside of a warehouse.

Inclement Weather Policy: In the event of inclement weather, this KidVantage site follows the Issaquah School District closure schedule which is where KidVantage's main hub is located.

Family Friendly Volunteer Info: Let us know in the RSVP notes if you are bringing any volunteers who are 12 to 17 years old (PLEASE INCLUDE THE FULL NAME OF ALL VOLUNTEERS UNDER AGE 18). Children 12 or 13 years old must be accompanied by an adult chaperone on a one-to-one basis, and all volunteers will sign in on KidVantage's printed sign-in sheet upon arrival. It is the volunteer's responsibility to track his or her hours for community service (KidVantage can provide a tracking form if needed). If volunteer hour verification is needed for school, please bring your school's required paperwork so that KidVantage staff can sign off at the end of our volunteer shift. Thanks!

Optional Donation Info: KidVantage accepts donations at this facility, so feel free to bring any baby items such as clothing, toys, or diapers (this is not required for our volunteer shift). An updated list of KidVantage's greatest donation needs can be found on the KidVantage site.

Where to Meet:

Please meet inside the KidVantage building (sign-in sheets will be in the Volunteer Room). Look for our One Brick name tags!

KidVantage (formerly Eastside Baby Corner):

KidVantage (formerly EBC) was founded in 1990 because Karen Ridlon, a local pediatric nurse practitioner, became concerned about the large numbers of babies in her practice that began life without adequate food, clothing, beds or safety equipment. Her commitment to giving these children a stronger start grew from a idea and a few items gathered in her dining room, into an agency that in 2016 filled its 500,000th order of absolute essentials.

For 50 weeks each year, volunteers and staff at KidVantage collect community donations, purchase and distribute children’s and maternity items to families in collaboration with organizations helping families in our area. Case managers from partner agencies assess the needs of the family, request the items from KidVantage, pick up and deliver them to the family. Serving a broad area across King County that extends to the Cascade foothills and from south of Renton into south Snohomish County, KidVantage serves as a diaper bank, a clothing bank, and a food source for more than 800 kids each week.

KidVantage leverages the impact of direct service providers by providing essential goods to the families they are helping. We practice good stewardship of resources through smart purchasing in bulk, reliance on volunteers and in-kind donations, including warehouse space donated by Rowley Properties. EBC is the major source of baby food, formula, diapers, cribs and car seats for eleven local food banks.
