Event Description:

Lifelong’s food and nutrition program, Chicken Soup Brigade, improves the nutritional health of individuals living with chronic conditions and hunger. We recognize the importance of nutrition to overall health. It has the power to reduce symptoms of many illnesses. It can minimize medication side effects. And it can provide comfort when it is needed most.

Chicken Soup’s clients have specific health challenges, such as HIV, diabetes, kidney disease, cancers, or disabling arthritis. Most are living below the Federal Poverty Level, and all require assistance in managing their nutritional health. Chicken Soup offers a comprehensive food and nutrition program designed not only to feed people but to nourish them.

What we'll be doing:

Kitchen volunteers are a part of CSB’s lively, bustling kitchen operation! You're a part of a team of top chefs who prepare nutritious and delicious meals for our chronically ill clients. Slicing, dicing, chopping, packaging—all are examples of tasks you could do in any given shift. No prior kitchen experience required…just a willingness to learn a new skill. Each week we prepare and package 4000 meals—we couldn’t do this without our amazing community of volunteers!

What you should know:

What to Wear: Solid, closed toe shoes are required for safety reasons (no sandals, flip flops, slippers, Uggs, etc). We recommend dressing in layers since it can be chilly in the kitchen. Volunteers should be able to stand for the entire session, and may be asked to perform some light lifting and bending. Hair should be tied back and covered for hygiene reasons. We will provide clean bandanas, aprons and gloves for you to wear.

Parking: There is ample free street parking in the neighborhood, or you can park in our lot if there are open spots.

Group Member Application: All Lifelong volunteers are now required to fill out a volunteer application, including permission to run a criminal background check and acknowledgement of Lifelong's volunteer agreement, waiver and release. Paper applications will be available at Chicken Soup Brigade, or volunteers can complete the Online Group Member Application ahead of time (fields marked with asterisks are required; Group or Employer Name will be "One Brick"). Volunteers can request to be removed from Lifelong's mailing list in the Additional Questions, Comments or Concerns? field.

Let us know in the RSVP notes if you are bringing any volunteers under 18. Children 12 and over are welcome to volunteer at Lifelong with an adult chaperone, and all volunteers under 18 must submit a signed Parental Consent Form and a Lifelong Volunteer Application (Minor) prior to each volunteer session.

For food safety reasons, please notify Lifelong staff if you have any physical limitations or allergies, open cuts, or do not feel well prior to volunteering.

Where to Meet:

Entering the 210 S. Lucile building: Ring the doorbell at the first door on the left when you’re facing the building. This is the easiest way to get into the kitchen. A staff member will show you where to put your coats and bags, and will have you sign a waiver when you get on site.

Lifelong:

Lifelong's mission is to empower people living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS and/or other chronic conditions to lead healthier lives. Lifelong was formed in 2001 through the merger of Chicken Soup Brigade and Northwest AIDS Foundation. From our beginnings in 1983, when we passed a soup can around Volunteer Park and collected $42 to help people living with HIV/AIDS in our community, Lifelong has remained a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS and continues to be a champion of healthy lives for all. Today, our years of serving people with HIV/AIDS have provided us with the knowledge base to help others experiencing hunger and the spectrum of HIV illnesses.
