Event Description:

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is pleased to present King Lear for the very first time. King Lear follows the journey of an aging king, faced with his own mortality and mental decline, who tries to secure the legacy of his kingdom by dividing it amongst his three daughters. Only through loss—of status, of love, of loyalty—does King Lear learn what is truly resonant at the end of a life.

What we'll be doing:

Volunteer responsibilities include passing out playbills, setting up and breaking down chairs and tents, selling merchandise, collecting surveys, cleaning up at the end of the night, and performing other duties assigned by the House Management Staff.

What you should know:

Please report to the performance site at the scheduled time regardless of weather. While the Shakespeare Company does cancel performances due to inclement weather, this decision is typically made very close to performance time. If the performance is canceled earlier in the day, we will contact you via email.

We advise that volunteers wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes and layers as it can get chilly once the sun goes down. Volunteers should be comfortable being on their feet and may occasionally be lifting objects of less than 20 pounds.

Volunteers are invited to watch the performance the evening they volunteer from the Friends Section. Volunteers are also eligible for discounts on Commonwealth Shakespeare Company merchandise.

Where to Meet:

The performance site is located at the Parkman Bandstand, roughly across from the Loews movie theater on Tremont Street. When you arrive, report directly to the storage POD to the left of the stage to sign-in and receive your volunteer t-shirt. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 6pm. If a volunteer is running late, please check in at the Information Tent located to the left of the stage. A staff member will then direct them to the volunteer coordinator. Please check in with the One Brick Event Manger.

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company:

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is dedicated to performing the works of William Shakespeare in vital and contemporary productions that are presented free of charge to Bostons diverse communities, and to educating Bostons youth not only about Shakespeare but also about their own potential for creativity. Since 1996 the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company has presented professional productions of Shakespeare to Boston audiences during the summer months when local theatre companies tend to be on hiatus from their regular seasons, but when there are record numbers of people in the city. Now in its seventeenth season, Shakespeare on the Common has become an annual Boston tradition, modeled along the lines of Shakespeare in the Park in Central Park and the many other free outdoor summer Shakespeare events throughout the country.
