Event Description:
NYC Parks MulchFest recycles thousands of Christmas trees into mulch/wood chips and spreads them in areas around City Parks to nourish the soil. We will volunteer at the event in Brooklyn's Prospect Park at the Park Circle location.
What we'll be doing:
Help prepare trees for mulching. Take off ornaments & any other decorations. Go collect trees and bring them to the area near the chipper. (We will not be involved with the chipping machine.) We will also help spread the fresh, aromatic mulch generated during this event to help insulate trees from the cold weather and retain moisture. We will also help prepare bags of mulch for the public to take home.
What you should know:
An all outdoor event. Wear warm clothes that can get dirty and boots or sturdy shoes. Pizza lunch will be served.
Where to Meet:
At the volunteer table at the Park Circle entrance to Prospect Park. It is at the corner of Prospect Park Southwest and Parkside Ave. Use the address of the TD Bank across the street to find it - 210 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn NY.
Prospect Park Alliance:
The Prospect Park Alliance partners with the City of New York to preserve and maintain Prospect Park for the enjoyment of millions of visitors each year.
Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the mid-nineteenth century, Prospect Park is one of Brooklyns most treasured destinations and a national landmark.
The Prospect Park Alliance is a nonprofit organization founded in 1987 to restore and maintain Prospect Park after a long period of steady deterioration and decline. We preserve the natural environment, restore historic design and provide public programs and amenities for the Park, which receives more than 10 million visits each year.
The Alliance plays a significant role in funding the operating budget that keeps the Park clean, safe and beautiful, and employs three-quarters of the staff that take care of the Park and engage its diverse surrounding communities. Today, Prospect Park is an international model for urban parks, and one of the premier green spaces in the United States.
