Event Description:
Enjoy a direct volunteer service opportunity with The Boston Debate League. Every year, the Boston Debate League engages over 1,000 Boston Public School Students across 26 schools, in debate. Through debate students gain an opportunity to hone skills like argumentation, self-efficacy, community, knowledge of current events, as well as many academic benefits.
Six times a year, The Boston Debate League holds tournaments where students can compete against those from other schools in groups of two. Each tournament round is judged by a volunteer, like you.
What we'll be doing:
During the time, a volunteer judge will listen to arguments made by students based off of evidence and score them. At the end, the volunteer gets to give feedback to the students on what they did well and what they could improve on for next time. This is critical for students progression and skill development. Additionally, the volunteer will score each student individually, and as a team but do not reveal this to students. No prior debate experience is required, the Boston Debate League will train you on the day of the event everyhting you will need to know.
What you should know:
This will be a fun and rewarding experience for volunteers to take part in a direct service opportunity with some of Boston's best, and brightest students. You can make a difference, all you have to do is listen.
Where to Meet:
Volunteers are asked to arrive for a brief volunteer training at TechBoston Academy at 7:30 am. There is plenty of parking at TechBoston Academy and is only a short walk from the Ashmont T stop. Registration will be at the main entrance. Volunteers will be greeted by staff who will tell them where to go next. You will meet the One Brick Event manager in the volunteer training session. Please inform the event manager if you are running late or can no longer make the event.
