Event Description:
Operation Sack Lunch (OSL) serves three nutritionally dense meals a day, seven days a week, to the hungry living in the Seattle area. Approximately 220,000 meals (hot meals and sack lunches) are provided annually, prepared by OSL chefs and the help of volunteers like you!
What we'll be doing:
OSL provides meals directly on the street at the Outdoor Meal Site and provides meals for 5 area shelters, 3 youth programs, and the Municipal Court of Seattle Community Court program. Volunteer tasks include, but are not limited to: Meal prep, sack lunch assembly, serving, and clean-up. Occasionally, help is needed with inventory or organizing the walk-in freezer and storage areas.
What you should know:
Volunteers should call the kitchen at (206) 357-3272 to be let in since the front doors will be locked. Wear clean, comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes (layering is recommended, especially during colder weather since it may be hot in the kitchen). Hair will need to be pulled back; hairnets are available for anyone whose hair is too long to be uncovered & too short to be pulled back securely. OSL is a scent-free environment, so please refrain from wearing strong perfumes, colognes, or deodorants. Volunteers are encouraged to enjoy the meal they've helped to prepare!
Due to health and safety concerns, no one under the age of 13 is allowed to work inside the OSL kitchen. Volunteers under the age of 18 will need a completed permission slip (signed by a parent or legal guardian) and an accompanying and supervising adult. Please let us know in the RSVP "Notes" field if you are bringing a child under the age of 18 with you.
Where to Meet:
The kitchen is located up a short flight of stairs, through the double doors, and across the foyer to the cafeteria (the kitchen is located on the left).
