Event Description:
Following our second shift of volunteering at the McLaren Lodge Tree Lighting Celebration we will gather at a spot TBD and take a short walk up to Peacock Meadow to catch the opening night of Golden Gate Park's annual Lighted Forest outdoor art exhibition "Entwined" by San Francisco artist Charles Gadeken.
Entwined’s forest of illuminated color has lit up Peacock Meadow in Golden Gate Park every winter since 2020, immersing park visitors in a realm of art, technology, and nature. In 2023, the installation is returning as Entwined: Elder Mother, a new iteration of the art installation that features a monumental shade-bearing tree that moves in the wind. Entwined: Elder Mother will be on display from December 7, 2023 to April 28, 2024.
This year we’re introducing Entwined: Elder Mother, a new iteration of the art installation, will welcome visitors to JFK Promenade in front of Peacock Meadow. Elder Mother is a monumental shade-bearing tree that moves in the wind. The 30-ft metal sculpted tree carries a 25-ft canopy offering a place for park-goers to gather day and night with ever-changing illumination and color. Elder Mother also incorporates six unique QR codes on the tree ‘leaves’ which allow attendees to control the tree’s lighting patterns.
In addition to checking out the new Elder Mother installation we'll take a quick walk up to the Conservatory of Flowers to view the Conservatory's nightly projected light show Photosynthesis.
What we'll be doing:
Exploring and viewing the colorful new chapter of Entwined Lighted Forest.
What you should know:
Dress in layers as it's generally fairly brisk in the evenings in Golden Gate Park. Wear comfortable shoes. This year's installation is not built into the meadow as in past years but will be situated in front of Peacock Meadow along the JFK Promenade.
Stay focused. Althought the art installation is lit by colorful lights there are some dark spots. Please be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Expect a crowd. It's opening night after all and many people will already be there following the tree lighting ceremonies at McLaren Lodge.
If you think you might be hungry by that time pack a snack. Food trucks are usually parked nearby but expect long lines and a bit of a wait.
Where to Meet:
We'll meet at a spot to be emailed to participants following our second shift at the McLaren Lodge tree lighting celebration.
One Brick - San Francisco/East Bay:
One Brick is a 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer organization that brings volunteers together to support other local nonprofit organizations. One Brick has adopted an innovative twist to the volunteer experience: we create a friendly and social atmosphere around volunteering. After each volunteer event - which typically lasts only 3 to 4 hours - we invite volunteers to gather at a local restaurant or cafe where they can get to know one another in a relaxed social setting. Through our volunteer projects, we provide nonprofits with the much-needed labor to carry out their visions. At the same time we foster an environment in which our volunteers can meet new people, both socially and professionally.
