Event Description:

FareStart is a non-profit organization that trains homeless and disadvantaged individuals for jobs in the culinary industry, empowering them to transform their lives. For 30 years, FareStart has been providing meals to our community to offset food insecurity and relieve hunger. As a part of our response to the COVID-19 crisis, FareStart has leaned further into this work and has provided millions of meals to organizations across the Seattle area that serve youth, adults and families who are low income or experiencing homelessness.

What we'll be doing:

Volunteers help with a variety of tasks to help supplement the large amount of work that goes in to creating between 3,000 – 5,000 meals each day. We'll help prepare meals by completing basic preparation tasks such as: Assembling boxes for meal transportation, stamping meal bags, portioning, cleaning produce and more. FareStart staff will assign tasks based on individual skill and comfort level.

No kitchen experience or Food Handler's card is necessary, but food preparation does require standing on a hard surface for the duration of our shift. Chefs will assign tasks based on individual skill and comfort level.

Additional Info:

This Hunger Relief Kitchen volunteer opportunity is very limited, so it's essential that if you RSVP for this volunteer shift that you show up to volunteer. It's often difficult to find last-minute replacement volunteers, and the food that we're preparing in the Hunger Relief Kitchen is critical to our community neighbors in need - thanks for your understanding!

Volunteer orientation will start as close to 10:00 am as possible, so it helps if volunteers arrive early. Please do not arrive at FareStart before 9:45 am since FareStart catering staff have separate assignments and are not able to supervise volunteers until Hunger Relief Kitchen staff are ready at 9:45 am.

  • 9:45-10:00 am – Arrival time; volunteers put items in lockers
  • 10:00 am – Kitchen volunteer orientation; tasks assigned
  • 10:15 am – Production begins
  • 11:30am (30 min) – Lunch break **
  • 12:00 pm - 3:00 PM – Review final tasks; production resumes; help with cleanup (another 10 min break included)

** Lunch is provided during your scheduled break! If all volunteer tasks are completed before our shift is scheduled to end, volunteers may be released early. Volunteers are also welcome to stay past our scheduled shift end time if there are still tasks to be completed.

Please note that confidentiality is essential for FareStart student safety and that a photo release form must be signed by every FareStart student and graduate before their photograph is taken for any public display. The FareStart On-Site Volunteering Information document is available if you have specific questions.
