Event Description:

Mission Food Hub is an emergency food pantry created to distribute much needed food to the struggling Latino community in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grocery items are geared towards a Latino meal, but all neighborhood families are welcome as long as they need the food.

Volunteers begin to prepare items for food distribution shortly after 8:00 AM (10:00 AM on Mondays). The pantry now distributes food OUTDOORS on Mondays from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM or until they run out of food, and we'll be posting this event week to week whenever a member of the One Brick management team is present.

In addition to RSVPing on the One Brick website you MUST arrive on site by 9:00 AM (or earlier) [11:00 AM on Mondays] in order to secure a volunteer spot as volunteer spots are assigned on a first come, first serve basis.

Please bring the following:

  • A face mask to protect yourself and those around you. Should you forget to bring one the food pantry usually has disposable ones for you to use.
  • Latex or nitrile gloves are provided. There will be hand sanitizer for volunteers to disinfect their hands with, but please always have gloves on when handling food or hygiene products.
  • You may be asked to staff the long lines that circle the neighborhood, and depending on the weather forecasted please wear a hat or sunglasses and bring and apply sunblock as needed.
  • A water bottle and snacks. Volunteer snacks are generally available inside the warehouse, but if you're stationed outside you probably won't have access to any until you are relieved for your lunch break.
  • Sun protection.  As food distribution now takes place outdoors please remember to wear a hat, sunblock and/or sunglasses.  Properly worn face masks are still mandatory.

Please wear sturdy, closed toe and comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet throughout the shift. No sandals or flip flops allowed; your feet must be covered.

If you are not feeling 100% healthy, please stay home!!!

What we'll be doing:

Once you have checked in with the Food Hub staff you will be assigned a specific duty whether that be bagging food products inside the warehouse, helping outside with food distribution, collecting and breaking down empty cardboard boxes or monitoring people / vehicular traffic outside.

What you should know:

If you are stationed outside get to know the volunteers and staff working near you. Many of the clients do not speak English so if you need somebody to interpret it is best to know who can help. The majority of the clients speak Spanish or Cantonese, but many understand or speak English as well.

Volunteers are welcome to take groceries home whether for themselves or for a family/friend in need.  There will be designated times prior to or after general distribution to the registered participants.  At this time you will line up with other volunteers and proceed through the queue.  As is the same with the registered participants please take only what you can use.  We recommend you bring your own bag or grocery cart.  Social distancing while in line is recommended.

There is absolutely no eating inside the warehouse.  All food and drink must be consumed outside.  In addition please do not remove your face mask while inside the warehouse.

***It is important that you note and understand that all of the packing of food items into bags are done inside a large and airy warehouse, but is still considered inside an enclosed location, and therefore constitutes higher risk of COVID transmission than would be at any of the outdoor locations. We want to be up front so you can exercise your risk assessment and best judgment.***

Where to Meet:

Volunteer registration takes place at the second roll up door at 701 Alabama Street.  Please look for the staffed table stationed at the door.  If you need a signature for completing community service hours they can help you here as well.

Mission Food Hub:

Mission Food Hub is a grassroots organization aimed at feeding hungry Latino families in San Francisco's Mission District in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.  After community surveys were administered it was determined that thousands of people in the Mission were struggling to put food on their tables, thus community leaders from organizations such as Carnaval San Francisco, Latino Task Force San Francisco, Mission Language & Vocational School and several others created the Mission Food Hub food pantry.  Food is purchased in bulk through private and public donations then distributed outdoors to registered clients whom reside in the Mission District.  Grocery items are geared towards a Latino diet, but the pantry is open to all families who need the food.
