Event Description:
Join One Brick volunteers at the Second Harvest Food Drive CYPRESS WAREHOUSE location in San Jose. Volunteers will be sorting food. The primary responsibility of a Food Sort Volunteer is to prepare food for distribution by verifying, sorting, labeling, and repacking food items at their warehouse. Training is provided at the beginning of each shift.
Note you MUST SIGN-UP AS AN INDIVIDUAL DIRECTLY WITH SECOND HARVEST HERE https://www.shfb.org/give-help/volunteer/volcalendar-general/! and then RSVP here on the One Brick's calendar. However if there are no spaces left on the SHFB site then the shift is full - sorry.
Second Harvest Food Bank provides over a million pounds of food to individuals and families in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Currently they are supporting over 500 000 individuals every month - more than twice the amount than previous years.
What we'll be doing:
The set up at the warehouse is completely different from before COVID. We used to sort food donations from individuals. Because of the pandemic SHFB has not been accepting food donations. They now buy everything in bulk with monetary donations from companies and individuals.
I received this information from a One Birck volunteer who has been volunteering there on an indiviual basis: I’ve sorted apples, pears, kiwi and various veggies checking the quality of each piece. Then sometimes volunteers are on an assembly line packing boxes for distribution.
Each station or table is at least 6’ apart. We wash our hands, wear gloves and masks. The team leaders are good at making sure we are social distancing unless from the same household. The ventilation is good and we disinfect the work area when done. feel safe volunteering there and leave with a good feeling that I helped just a tad.
What you should know:
You will be working in a warehouse so safety and comfort are important.
- It can be chilly in the warehouse; however you will probably be working pretty hard - so layers are suggested.
- Long pants and close-toed shoes are required. High heels and sandals are not permitted in the warehouse. For sanitary reasons, tank tops are not permitted. Long sleeves are a good idea.
- It's best to leave purses, jewelry and other valuables at home or locked in your car trunk.
- Necklaces and long earrings pose a safety concern in the warehouse.
MASKS are required - please bring your own!
