Event Description:

Happy New Year, everyone! If you’ve made resolutions to volunteer more in 2020, I have a special volunteer project just for you! Please read on for more details.

The Lawrence Hall of Science has presented One Brickers with a unique volunteering opportunity! The Hall staff is looking for volunteers to help with their latest exhibition, Reinventing Reality, with a specific focus on the ongoing development of virtual reality (VR) and its successor, augmented reality (AR). You would be helping facilitate the use of the Oculus-type VR headsets by making sure guests put them on correctly and that they do not trip or fall while wearing them.

The schedule calls for (2) One Brick volunteers per shift. There might not always be a One Brick manager onsite, you would report to staff inside Pauley Hall, either with Veronica, Dee, Michelle, Bia or Rosalynn.

These are the open 3-1/2 hour shifts, MLK weekend and President’s weekend:

Saturday, January 18th 1:30pm—5:00pm (full)
Sunday, January 19th 10:00am—1:30pm open
Sunday, January 19th 1:30pm—5:00pm (full)
Monday, January 20th 10:00am—1:30pm (1 slot available)
Monday, January 20th 1:30pm—5:00pm open

Sunday, February 16th 10:00am—1:30pm (full)
Sunday, February 16th 1:30pm—5:00pm open
Monday, February 17th 10:00am—1:30pm open
Monday, February 17th 1:30pm—5:00pm open

There will be additional dates from March 28th daily until April 12th.

Be the first to learn about the new trends in virtual reality and augmented reality. Sign up for a shift to facilitate in our new exhibit and immerse yourself in this experience that will provide you with a unique opportunity to interact with 3D worlds. You don't need previous experience or training to sign up for these shifts!

Reinventing Reality is a traveling exhibit at the Hall, created by the Virtual Science Center. This exhibit is an exciting new immersive exhibition where you can explore the science, creativity, and innovation behind one of the world’s fastest-evolving technologies, virtual reality (VR). The exhibit combines science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts with playful components to reveal how individual elements of VR work. Presented in English and Spanish, Reinventing Reality sparks the imagination of kids, teens, and adults alike!

What we'll be doing:

The Hall is seeking volunteers to facilitate these special VR experiences by --
(1) Helping visitors comfortably and safely put on VR headsets. For most visitors, this is their first time!
(2) Helping visitors maintain their safety while they’re experiencing virtual reality in VR a headset.
(3) Be a friendly face of the Hall! Welcome visitors to the exhibit and talk with them while they’re in the exhibit.

No specialized Virtual Reality experience is required, though volunteers with an interest in this field are highly encouraged to apply. The Lawrence Hall of Science is the first place in the world that this exhibit is being presented to the public, and we’re very excited and honored to be a part of this. Because of its newness and the fact that it is a technology-heavy exhibit, flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes are also highly desirable.

What you should know:

Dress is comfortable and casual, closed toed shoes--as an exhibition guide, you'll be assisting guests with the VR devices, answer basic questions and be on your feet during most of the volunteer shift. Full cafe available onsite.

No other guests are permitted during the volunteer project time period. Parking passes will be  provided to  each volunteer and  will be handed to you at the Visitor Services Desk after you identify yourself as volunteer.

Wear your LOH t-shirt at all times that identifies yourself as volunteer while volunteering at the Hall. Bring your lunch if you do not plan to eat at the café and your reusable water bottle. There is a refrigerator, microwave, and water cooler on the B level. The volunteer lounge is beyond the B-level offices, B257. Bring a lock if you plan to use one of the lockers—please note that they are 12”x12”x12” square so they will NOT be able to accommodate a large backpack. Bring your One Brick name badge and lanyard if you've been issued one. Otherwise, ask Veronica to make you a round button type Hall volunteer badge.

Where to Meet:

Check in with the Visitor Services Desk, identify yourself as a volunteer for the Reinventing Reality exhibition, go through the central hall, turn right at the windows and enter Pauley Hall. Ask for Dee, Michelle, Bia, Rosalynn or Megan if this is your first time volunteering.
