Event Description:
HomeFirst has been helping those without homes in Santa Clara County since 1980. We are relentlessly focused on eliminating barriers to housing and stability for everyone we serve, which includes more than 4,000 adults, veterans, families with children, and youth each year.
• We focus on successful “Housing First” strategies where we get people into their own homes as quickly as possible and then support them so they can stay housed permanently.
• Our Boccardo Reception Center is the largest homeless service center in Santa Clara County. It provides shelter and transitional housing, housing search services, mental health counseling, employment search services, the area’s most comprehensive set of programs for homeless veterans, and a medical clinic.
• We have the county’s largest homeless outreach team, including specialists in outreach to veterans, and we are the area’s largest provider of seasonal cold weather shelter.
• We operate two family living centers in Santa Clara and San Martin, plus a shelter and programs for homeless youth in the foster care system in downtown San Jose.
What we'll be doing:
Meal service volunteers will help with final meal preparation tasks under the supervision of shelter staff. For example: tossing salad, slicing bread, plating food. Meal servers will then distribute plated food to shelter guests, prepare ‘late plates’, pour beverages, clear & wipe tables, clean up spills, etc. Volunteers need to be able to stand and walk for an extended period of time, use of hands and arms for stirring, slicing, lifting and pouring.
What you should know:
