Event Description:
The Canary Challenge continues to be a fully supported bike ride, offering a 5km walk/ride/run, 50km, 50-mile, 75-mile, and 100-mile rides all with multiple food and water stops, mechanical and medical assistance, and plenty of SWAG. The rides cater to all levels of cycling strength from children, to fixed gear bikes and tandems, to time trial champions, the Canary Challenge is a ride for everyone! Over 1000 riders and 150 volunteers participated in the event in 2014 and raised $1.1 million for the Canary Center at Stanford.
This year, Canary Challenge cyclists will ride with the goal of raising $1.5 million for the Canary Foundation and cancer early detection research programs. Unlike many other organized charity bike rides, the Canary Challenge ensures 100% of all funds raised are directed to the event beneficiary. We hope to have approximately 1,500 riders this year.
What we'll be doing:
You are responsible for helping check-in the cyclists. These volunteers will sit at the Check-In & Packet Pick-up tent and greet the rider, look up their name and hand them their “packet”. Packet includes: bib #, route map, bracelet for that route and turn-by-turn directions. You will check the riders name on the master list and if the rider raised $1,500 they will receive a Jersey. If they raised $2,500 they will receive a Jersey and Shorts. Ask the rider their size and the volunteer back-up person will retrieve the sizes. If we run out of specific sizes that a rider would like, please have them fill out a form and Canary will order and ship them one. Please check in at the volunteer booth before heading to the Check-In & Packet Pick-up tent.
What you should know:
The village is outdoors, so we recommend wearing sunscreen and checking the weather beforehand to dress accordingly. More details will be posted as the event nears.
Where to Meet:
Sign in at the volunteer booth at Varian Medical Systems. There you will receive your volunteer shirt, lunch tickets and more instructions about your position.
Canary Foundation:
Canary Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to the discovery of early cancer detection tests. If cancer is found early the majority of people would survive but we lack the tools for early detection. Canary is working on a two-test process; detecting cancer through a blood test and pinpointing its location through molecular imaging. Canary has a special partnership with Stanford University that lead to the opening of the Canary Center at Stanford for cancer early detection. Its the only center in the world working on Canarys two-test process. Its the first time Stanford has allowed for faculty members to be 100% dedicated to early detection.
