NOLA - a trip full of firsts!
This trip was full of “firsts” for me. Although this wasn’t my first work trip serving others, it was my first work trip in NOLA. It was the first time that I went on a trip without knowing anyone else, or having family or friends along.
When I think of the trip to New Orleans, I’m reminded really of three things--three “firsts.” I learned new skills, like how to install laminate flooring and how to handle and use different kinds of saws--a table saw, a miter saw, and a jigsaw!! I’ll be able to use these skills throughout my life, at home and to help others.
I met a great group of people--we got to know each other really well, and I feel like I’ve made some lifelong friends. For a week, we lived together, talked together, played together, ate together, explored New Orleans together, and worked together!
And, last but definitely not least, I was able to work with my new friends, and use my new skills when we worked on Ms. Grace’s house. The work we did there made a real difference for her. The St. Bernard Project recently posted photos of Ms. Grace moving back in to her home, which makes me feel really good about helping out. We really were able to help someone move forward and get her life back so long after the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.
