Event Description:

Through job training, healthy food distribution, and local farm partnerships, DC Central Kitchen offers path-breaking solutions to poverty, hunger, and poor health. Since founded in 1989, DCCK has prepared 25 million meals for our low-income and at-risk neighbors in Washington, DC. The 5,000 meals we dish out every day are loaded into our fleet of trucks and distributed at little or no cost to 100 nearby homeless shelters, transitional homes, and nonprofit organizations, saving them money and nourishing their clients.

What we'll be doing:

You'll stir, chop, slice, dice - but those without skills in the kitchen need not be afraid!

What you should know:

Due to health regulations, volunteers who do not follow this dress code will not be allowed to work in the Kitchen. Volunteers must wear:

  • Long pants (no pajama pants and no spandex pants please)
  • Closed-toed shoes (no sandals)
  • Tank-tops are not allowed
  • No exposed midriff
  • DCCK will provide you with a free hairnet and apron!

PLEASE NOTE: Any court-appointed hour requirements must be fulfilled through DCCK directly and not through One Brick -- One Brick staff will be unable to sign any paperwork, nor will DCCK staff on event day. Please click here for further information.

Where to Meet:

The main kitchen is located at 2nd and E Streets NW in a blue-gray building. Look for DC Central Kitchen signs and follow the long driveway off E Street to the service entrance. Upon entering, hang a right and you'll find the group meeting room.

DC Central Kitchen:

DC Central Kitchen, Inc. (DCCK) is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) community corporation that was incorporated on July 27, 1988 and began its first phase of operations on January 20, 1989. DCCK is founded on the premise that waste is wrong, be it food, money, or the potential for people to live productive lives. DC Central Kitchen serves as a resource for more than 60 community kitchens operating throughout the United States and, through the Campus Kitchens Project, has itself become a national program operating in several states and the DC metropolitan area. The mission of DC Central Kitchen is to use food as a tool to: * Strengthen Bodies, by safely recovering unserved food from local foodservice businesses to feed children and adults at partner agencies throughout the greater Washington area * Empower Minds, by providing culinary job training for unemployed men and women and community service opportunities for youth and adults * Build Communities, by providing working examples, innovative solutions, and shared technology to a cooperative and effective national network of programs that use food to make change in their communities.
