Event Description:
VIDA has been serving underprivileged communities in Latin America since 1991 by providing medicines, medical supplies and equipment donated to VIDA by San Francisco Bay Area hospitals, clinics and individuals. Through such donations they helped to provide care for over 4 million people in under-served communities throughout 12 Latin American and Caribbean countries.
In partnership with other US-based humanitarian non-profits, to date they have shipped over 425 ocean containers of medical relief worth over $400 million.
What we'll be doing:
Volunteers will be sorting donated medical supplies. The supplies are sorted into broad categories and then into boxes of specific items. The boxes are receive from local hospitals and come with a mix of different supplies, from bandages and syringes to respiratory and surgical equipment. In order to clear customs, everything needs to be organized categorically. Additionally, expired supplies need to be separated.
What you should know:
No medical background is necessary. The sorting is not physically strenuous but we do spend the entire time on our feet. Closed-toe shoes are required and we recommend layers of comfortable clothing as our warehouse facility can be dusty and the temperature varies according to the weather outside.
Where to Meet:
