Event Description:

Sun Bread Logo

Saturday’s/Sunday’s Bread is a program that serves free hot meals to people in need in Boston every Saturday and Sunday at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 35 Bowdoin Street, Boston. Our mission is to provide these healthy meals in a safe and inviting atmosphere, free from Society’s prejudices and judgments. We ask only that those served, regardless of their situation, join us in perpetuating an environment free of racial, cultural or religious stereotypes. This is an interfaith, interracial, interdenominational activity of people concerned with the hungry in the Boston area.

What we'll be doing:

Several people will work in the kitchen, putting the meals on plates, several more will serve as waiters, bringing the meals to the guests seated at tables. One or two may be assigned to serving coffee. One person will be designated the doorman, with responsibility to control the flow of guests into the dining hall and to keep a count. One person will be designated the maitre d', with responsibility for directing guests to tables and coordinating the waiters.

What you should know:

Be sure to have a meal before you go. Wear comfortable, rubber-soled shoes (floors can be
slippery) and clothes that you won't mind getting a little dirty. Bring an apron if you want to wear one; a limited number should be available from the Kitchen Executive.

Do not bring food. All the food for the meal is arranged in advance. Collections of toiletries (from hotel stays, for example) are always welcome, but try to bring a fairly large number. We do not distribute clothing.

Where to Meet:

The entrance to the dining hall is through the door to the right of the main church entrance. Go up the ramp and ring the bell.

Saturday/Sundays Bread:

Sundays Bread is a program that serves free hot meals to people in need in Boston every Sunday at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 35 Bowdoin Street, Boston. Our mission is to provide these healthy meals in a safe and inviting atmosphere, free from Societys prejudices and judgments. We ask only that those served, regardless of their situation, join us in perpetuating an environment free of racial, cultural or religious stereotypes. This is an interfaith, interracial, interdenominational activity of people concerned with the hungry in the Boston area. Over the course of its 28-plus years, Sundays Bread has served more than 300,000 guests. Those who partake are served in a dining room setting, eight guests to a table. The meals are hot and nutritious and include fruit juice, a garden salad, a main course, dessert, coffee and, of course, bread; they are prepared fresh on site in the hours before the guests arrive, then served to the tables by volunteers.
