Event Description:

Food Lifeline uses creative solutions to stop hunger, including redirecting bulk shipments of donated food from manufacturers, farmers, grocery stores, and restaurants - good food that would otherwise go to waste. Through the support of its dedicated volunteers, Food Lifeline can make this food available to families and individuals who really need it. Food Lifeline is able to provide over 213,000 meals a day to local food assistance programs through the 350+ members of their food program network, which includes food banks, food pantries, meal programs, shelters, and after-school programs that have all been certified by Food Lifeline to meet the highest standards for client care and food safety.

What we'll be doing:

Volunteer repacking projects could include labeling canned goods, repacking large totes of frozen vegetables, and/or sorting & inspecting donated food products from regional food drives. Our exact repacking project will vary depending on Food Lifeline's most critical needs, but it's always fun and rewarding!

What you should know:

IMPORTANT: After RSVPing with One Brick, please register with Food Lifeline directly for our reserved group session using our unique link (https://foodlifeline.volunteerhub.com/lp/OneBrick/), which will confirm attendance for Food Lifeline staff in order to plan, prepare & lay out the materials needed for our volunteer repacking project.

Please register with Food Lifeline as early as possible since their volunteer system will automatically release our unclaimed reserved spots the week before our volunteer shift (typically at 4:00 pm Pacific the Monday before our shift). Food Lifeline has limited ability to set up accounts or register volunteers for shifts onsite. If you have a last-minute cancellation, please keep in mind that the One Brick and Food Lifeline volunteer management systems are separate so you'll need to cancel your volunteer shift in each system.

Physical Requirements: Volunteers should be able to stand for the entire session, and may be asked to perform some light lifting and bending. Bring reading glasses if needed since expiration dates may need to be read. For food safety reasons, please notify Food Lifeline staff if you have any physical limitations, open cuts, or do not feel well prior to volunteering.

Getting Here: Free parking in the lot in front of the building. Onsite parking is limited, so Food Lifeline encourages carpooling. The nearest bus stop is 132 if taking public transportation.

Entrance: Look for the big "Food Lifeline" sign above the front door. Please try to arrive within 15 minutes before the listed start time for our shift since the front door is usually unlocked 15 minutes before our scheduled shift, but locked immediately after Food Lifeline staff welcomes volunteers for that session. Volunteers who are more than 10 minutes late to a session will need to reschedule unless they can arrange to be let into the building upon late arrival.

Personal Items: Food Lifeline has lockers to store coats & small personal items but they encourage you to leave valuable personal items such as headphones or wireless earbuds at home, locked up, or in your pockt during our shift. Water bottles & beverages are not allowed in the volunteer work area, but may be left in the volunteer break area.

What to Wear: Solid, closed toe shoes are required for safety reasons (no sandals, flip flops, slippers, Uggs, etc). We recommend dressing in layers since we'll be working in a warehouse environment which can get a little chilly. Other than that, just dress comfortably and with the knowledge that some of our repacking projects can occasionally get a little messy! Projects may require hand washing, aprons, beard guards, and/or hairnets. Feel free to wear your own hat to keep your head covered, but long hair should be secured away from your face with a hair elastic for hygiene reasons.

Inclement Weather Policy: In the event of inclement weather, Food Lifeline will notify all volunteers via email of site closures or volunteer shift modifications.

Family Friendly Volunteer Info: Let us know in the RSVP notes if you are bringing any volunteers under 18. Kids 10+ are welcome to volunteer at Food Lifeline with an adult chaperone & separate Food Lifeline registration, and all volunteers under 18 must submit a signed Parent Consent Form prior to each volunteer session at Food Lifeline (can be filled out on-site). If volunteer hour verification is needed for school, please bring the necessary paperwork so that Food Lifeline staff can sign at the end of our shift. Thanks!

Where to Meet:

The volunteer check-in area is located just inside the Food Lifeline entrance on the right-hand side of the entrance & lobby (after your onsite temperature check upon arrival). We'll have a One Brick roster for you to sign & an online check-in for Food Lifeline here... look for your Event Manager!

Food Lifeline:

Food Lifeline approaches hunger as a logistical problem that can be solved. Working with the food industry and its surpluses, we come up with creative solutions to stopping hunger, including redirecting good food from manufacturers, farmers, grocery stores and restaurants that might otherwise go to waste. We provide 116,000 meals a day to local food assistance programs, and that, combined with our policy work, creates a sustainable approach to hunger.
